Learning By Example

by xearther on July 7, 2011

When the Almost Free Downloads membership reaches 150 I am going to start a project that will take some of the downloadable information products and build a successful membership site. The PLR products I will use, whether from this site or elsewhere,  will not be the centerpiece of the membership. They are simply intellectual fuel, inspirational clay that is to be molded to my vision for the site.

This future site I’m being cryptic about has all of the right ingredients in favor of its long term success, beating those lousy 4 to 1 odds against it. I look forward to getting started, sharing every detail in the site’s development with AFD members as soon as the membership count here trips 150.

A Grocery Store on Wilshire

by xearther on July 7, 2011

One of my earliest childhood memories was going with my dad to pick up my mom when she got off work. She was a checker at the A&P on Wilshire. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, POP (Pacific Ocean Park) was a very active amusement park giving Uncle Walt some competition at the beach, and there was a miniature golf course on Wilshire I enjoyed going to. What 6 year old wouldn’t? Yes, you could play miniature golf ON WILSHIRE BLVD.

What I enjoyed doing while my dad and I waited for my mom to finish up was to go into the back room of the A&P. It seemed so mysterious to me. Here you had this clean and bright presentation of goods for sale in the store, and in the back room you could see how the magicians of food retail made it happen. I know that may sound mundane. But to my six year old eyes it was fascinating.

Way before surveillance cameras, I remember they had an upper floor in the back that had small slits in the wall running the length of the store so you could observe the customer that had a predilection for thinking the items on the shelves were there for the thrill of not paying for them.

I bring this memory up about the A&P’s back room because I want to have a place here that will serve the same function. No, not a dock for unloading cereal boxes to put on “almost free” shelves. But a place that reveals how all the magic is made to happen on a site that delivers digital information products. Many if not most of the techniques I’ve used to bring this site “live” you may be very familiar with. But there are also ways I’ve done things here that are unusual but very effective. So even if you’ve “seen it all”, being a member of Almost Free Downloads is going to buy you more than just an expectation of downloading files. My hope is it will buy you a pleasant surprise now and then.

And if the surprise helps you in your wealth creation efforts then I have accomplished the long term objective of Almost Free Downloads: to serve others in their search for information that will spur their creativity and in turn, like this site,  be productive in the service of others in the marketplace of ideas.

If you have any points of curiosity please leave a comment. Also, for future reference, if you want to read other posts belonging to the “Back Room” theme then click on the “Back Room” tab above.
